It’s Time to End the NFL International Series

Yesterday, I got an update that the 49ers will play the Rams in China in 2018, which will be the first time an NFL team plays a game in China. It will be the thirteenth season that the NFL has played games outside the US.

Roger Goodell is so hellbent on expanding American football worldwide that he is forgetting about one thing: his fans at home.

His fans at home who only have 8 home games a year to go to as it is. His fans at home who made this sport what it is today. His fans at home who love football more than any other sport.

Yeah, he’s giving away those home game to countries who care more about soccer than our form of football.

Granted, if he wants to have one international game per season, I could live with that. I still would not be happy, but at least it is just one.

Then it became two, then three, and now four. That doesn’t even include the games the Bills play in Toronto.

Enough is enough! I’m tired of the NFL having football outside the country in areas where they don’t want American football. NFL Europe failed miserably and was shut down, so the proper response would be to play more games in Europe, right? No!

I remember in 2010 wanting to watch the Broncos play the 49ers at Candlestick Park to see a rematch of Super Bowl XXIV. The Broncos and 49ers only play each other once every four years, and only play in the Bay Area once every eight years. So when I found out the game I wanted to go to for years was going to be played in London, I was outraged. I ended up flying to Denver in 2014 to watch them play instead.

Is that fair to us? Sure, Goodell wants to expand his market, but giving away legendary Super Bowl rematches to markets that have failed to sustain American football in the past is insulting as hell to the rest of us.

Is it fair to the fans in Los Angeles that their team will be playing games in Europe for the next three years? They already have not had professional football there in 22 years.

Is it fair to the fans in Cincinnati that they will be losing a home game against another playoff team to Wembley?

The answer to both questions is an obvious no.  I don’t care what they want in Europe. I don’t care what they want in China. I don’t care what Roger Goodell wants. We in America are tired of losing home games to areas that do not want professional football.

Let’s keep NFL games here in America where they belong. If they want to try NFL in Europe: Part II or even NFL Overseas, I don’t give a shit. I don’t want games played by our teams played outside the country.

Goodell has already done enough to ruin the NFL as it is. He should not be taking what we have and giving it to countries that have no desire for it.
