Zorstique’s Update of the Week

As I have said before, I recognize that for some people, having to wait from Friday morning until Monday morning to receive a new update can be difficult. I am still refusing to post an update over the weekend, so I thought that a safe compromise would be to post an article on Friday with all of the updates. This will allow you (the loyal reader) time to digest any updates you might have missed throughout the week during this time of hardship known as the weekend. In the interest of keeping articles a short as possible, I present you with last week’s updates that were not covered in the last edition of Zorstique’s Mariners Update of the Week. I will not include today’s Mariner’s Update of the Day, as that would be covered in this Friday’s edition. Enjoy!

Zorstique’s Mariners Update of the Day: – 5/14/2015
The Mariners lost last night, splitting the 2 game series with the San Diego Padres, 4-2. They still remain in 3rd place in the AL West, and are now 6 games down from 1st place (and only 2 games out of 5th place..) Yesterday I learned from Navorbro that when runners are on 3rd or 2nd base, they are considered in “scoring position.” This makes sense as a base hit in this type of situation often equals a run. I heard on the radio this morning that the Seattle Mariners were 1 for 13 when they had runners in scoring position. I admit I am not very baseball savvy, but I do not think a stat like this leads to many wins. One other thing I noticed is the catcher seemed to give up too many extra bases. I am unsure at this point if this had more to do with pitching, or catching. I would like to blame the bullpen (because they seem like an easy target) but if you are a catcher is it not your job to catch the balls that the pitcher throws?

The Mariners lost again 2-1 against the Red Sox, which was game one of 4 at home for this series. At 15-19 they are still holding on to the 3rd place spot in the AL West. 6 games out of 1st, and 2 games out of last. The Mariners are still struggling to get anything going when people are on base. I think they are at 1 of 19 in the last 2 games when runners are at scoring position. (When I started to pay attention to this.) Apparently Joe Kelly (Red Sox’s starting pitcher last night) was made to look like a good pitcher against the Mariners. He allowed only 5 hits, one run, and 3 walks in 6 1/3 innings. I did a quick calculation on his previous 4 starts and he was sitting at about a 9 ERA. I bet he is happy that the Mariners were nice enough to help lower that high number.

Perhaps the Mariners are just warming up for their awesome performance this Sunday against Boston. This will be game 2 of 10 that me and the grandson will attend.
