Zorstique’s Update of the Week

I apologize to everyone for not sending out an article last week (especially to you Ed), but I made an impromptu trip to Japan to see the son. I have wrapped up the last 2 weeks in one easy to follow timeline. I did not do as many updates the last couple of week, so it seems like only 1 week of updates anyways. The Mariners have not been playing very good lately, and it is making it harder to stay interested. Of all years to start watching them play, this would not seem the ideal year. Despite the bad year, my grandson has been having fun, and is still very optimistic that this is the year of the Mariner. Although I do not share his enthusiasm, he does know more about baseball then I do, so more then likely the Mariners will prove us all (besides him) wrong, and win it all this year. I just wish they would hurry up and start winning some games. One final note, I tried to play nice, but it has been decided that the A’s will lose out going forward, sorry Nav.

Since the last Mariners update (on Friday) done by our own Maynard, the Mariners have gone 3-1. Winning 2 of 3 at Toronto, and winning the first of 3 at Tampa Bay. Friday Hernandez hit 7-1, and will likely move to 8-1 tomorrow when he hits the pitching mound again. Fernando Rodney was credited for all 3 saves, moving him to 13 magical arrow saves on the season. The big news is that Cano is actually hitting the ball. I had almost given up on Robinson Cano, as he just appeared to be wasted space on the batting rotation. However Cano had 2 RBI’s in last night win against the Blue Jays, winning 4-1. Sadly going 3-1 was not enough to stay in the 3rd spot in the AL West, as the Rangers have gone on a 6 game winning streak. The Mariners have slid to 4th at 21-23. After finishing up at Tampa Bay, the Mariners will be heading home to play Cleveland for a 4 game series. Then it is 4 game series against the Yankees, which on Wednesday the 3rd me and the boy will be calling in sick to watch.

Yesterday was a magical day. I got home and the grandson was waiting for me, already watching the Mariners game. He could not find any of his jerseys, so he showed up with his Kyle Seager t-shirt. For those following along, this is the free t-shirt he received at the first game we attended this year. By the time I got home, it was the bottom of the 1st, the Mariners were up 2-0. I just missed Seager’s RBI, sending Smith to home plate. Luckily my grandson played it out for me, it was just like I saw it live. The Rays came back and tied it up in the bottom of the 1st. I swear Happ pitched 40 pitches in just the 1st, but still ended up pitching 6 innings, only giving up one more run in the 3rd. Then the 8 inning happened. The Mariners were down 2-3 when the Mariners score 4. A grand slam from my grandson’s new favorite 3rd baseman, Kyle Seager. Rodney steps up to close it in the bottom of the 9th, but decided he did not want to shoot an arrow today, so instead gave up 3 runs, allowing the Rays to tie it up. Then we enter the 10th inning, and what does Kyle Seager do? Hit another home run, sending the boy into a frenzy. He said that he is glad he could not find his jersey, and now wants to pick up a lucky Kyle Seager jersey this weekend. Mariners win 7-6, and are now 1 game down from 500, with Felix pitching tonight. They are still sitting in 4th place in the AL West, but have won 11 out of the last 16, so moving in the right direction.

A lot has happened since the last update. Apparently they did not like my impromptu trip to Japan, losing 4 of the last 5. When I left, the Mariners were sitting at 500, and 2nd in the AL West. Now they are 24-27 and back in 4th, just 4 games out of last place. I missed all but yesterday’s game out of the last 5, but if last night was any indication on how they were playing, I am surprised they pulled off 1 win in the last 5. Normally when Felix Hernandez takes the pitching mound, you just assume a victory (he was 8-1 entering last night.) I am not sure if he was sick, someone deflated his balls, or he just showed that even the mighty King Felix is a mere mortal, but he was awful last night. Not awful by Felix standards, but realistically awful by any pitcher’s standards. Felix gave up 7 runs (4 of which came from a grand slam by Teixeira in the 5th) and walked 5. The one small comfort is that when Felix was relieved in the top of the 5th, the bullpen allowed 0 runs, and only 1 hit. At least the bullpen appeared to be on last night. Up next is two more games against the Yankee’s. Tomorrow me and the boy will be there live and in person. Hopefully the Mariners get out of this funk they are in, in a hurry.

The grandson and I showed up early for the game yesterday. It seemed like yesterday was Mariner’s field trip day for every school in Western Washington, as large groups of kids were running around all over the place. There was not free gift for the kiddies however like all the other games we attended, other than the free baseball card they received at the gate. He ended up with another Felix Hernandez card, but was unfazed. We waited about an hour in line to get down towards the field to see the players. It was worth it, as he got Felix to sign his card. That certainly made his day. I do not want to talk about the game, other than to say the Mariners have dropped 6 of their last 7, and left about 72 runners on base again yesterday. They are only 2 games out of reaching their goal of being in last place in the AL West division.

Of course the Mariners lost again last night. I decided I would do some research, instead of just talking about what happened last night. The Mariners have played 54 games thus far, are are sitting at 24-30. In these 54 games they have been at bat 1834 times and they have 435 hits which puts them in 23rd place in all of baseball (out of 30 teams.) The have only scored 193 times thus far this year, which puts them in 28th place, and have given up 221 run (19th most.) Interestingly they have hit 62 home runs this year, which puts them in 5th place. Sadly it seems like most of these are solo home runs. With numbers like this, it would not seem like they would be winning much games, and as the numbers show they have only won one game in the last 8. It almost seems like the Mariners do not want to win the World Series this year.
