Quickly following their first franchise SB win in the 2013-2014 season (SB 48) a game in which they decimated a historic Denver Broncos offense there was a certain D word being thrown around Seattle radio, forums, twitter, Facebook and whatever platform in which sports is often discussed. No, that D word was not Dick (Looking at you Todd) but rather Dynasty. Football dynasties are a relatively rare thing in a sport so structured for parity however every decade seems to feature one. The Steelers of the 70’s, the 49ers of the 80’s, The Cowboys of the 90’s and The Patriots of the 2000’s. However, the 2010’s seems to be missing such a Dynasty, several of the NFL’s more historic teams have claimed SB wins with at least one first timer in Seattle mixed in.
After their 2013 SB run ending a 37-year drought and finally moving Seattle out of Forbes #1 most miserable sports cities, it appeared they could be the team of the decade to do it. They featured the number 1 scoring PPG Defense, a young promising QB, an All-Star RB capable of carrying a team and a coach who had seemed to figure it all out after returning from the college game. However, the aura of luck that seemed to surround the Seahawks would burn out after a super nova of a play in the next year’s SB. It appeared as the Patriots would once again face losing a SB after an improbable and really a bigly yugely tremendously lucky catch by Jermaine Kearse to setup 1st and goal for the go-ahead TD late in SB 49. However, lightning would not strike New England a 2nd time but rather a sequence that would go down as arguably the worst play call of all time when the Seahawks on 2nd and 1 and a man coined Beast Mode at RB decided instead to throw the football. What happened next will live in NFL infamy (On a side note, this play was recently selected by NFL Network as THE worst play of all time) as Russell Wilson would throw an interception to the Patriots Malcom Butler
Since that time, we have seen the Seahawks continually trend down. They have elected to pay next to nothing for O-Line while trying to convert D-Line and guys who should be driving trucks into Offensive Lineman. They have made mind boggling trades in trading for Percy Harvin and then repeating the same mistake trading for a Pass catching TE who doesn’t fit their scheme, can’t block and is, in the words of Hawks players, soft.
The year following the SB Loss they proceeded to lose on the road in the Wild card. Wait, right ok technically they won that game in what can only be described as a Pete Carroll soul selling lucky missed FG by Blair Walsh in Minnesota. They would however go on to get decimated in the first half at Carolina and despite a valiant effort at a comeback would fall short.
The 2016-2017 season saw the Hawks take more steps backwards as Russell Wilson was asked to carry the load. A $6M offensive line, a QB who basically needs to be carried and a defense aging and injured again would lose on the road in the divisional round. Pete Carroll is now losing the locker room as players yell at coaches, players yell at reporters and players yell at each other. The once young, promising and hungry team has become a team full of selfish overpaid veterans so quickly to point the finger at others and it’s become clear to those outside of the Emerald city and not wearing puke lime green that this team’s downward trend has all but shut the door on themselves for another championship. At this point the 12’s can only hope that their demise is swift and the rebuilding process begins before it is too late. RIP Seattle Dynasty, you were gone before we ever knew you.
