WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSDFW.COM) – Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray surpassed Emmitt Smith’s franchise single-season rushing record of 1,773 yards on Sunday in the season finale against Washington.

On the next play, Dez Bryant broke a franchise record of his own.

Murray’s first quarter carry — his 7th of the day — went for 32 yards, pushing his season total to 1,798 yards.

In 1995, Smith rushed for 1,773 yards on 377 carries (4.7 yards per carry). He rushed for 25 touchdowns, while also catching 62 passes for 375 yards.

Smith released the following statement following the record-breaking rush:

“I couldn’t be happier for him. He is very deserving of this recognition. This is something that I know DeMarco will share with the whole team, because he knows that they all had a hand in his success.
I am proud of him because I know how hard it is to do what he did this year. I am also proud because I’ve watched him bounce back from some injury setbacks in his first few years. He’s a worked through all that, and he deserves to have this record. I want him and the whole team to keep up this level of play and carry it into the playoffs. “

Murray had a season low 58 yards rushing last Sunday, just six days after undergoing surgery to address a broken fourth metacarpal in his left hand.
