I have to admit, I started doing the Zorstique’s Mariners Update of the Day piece for completely selfish reasons. Mainly to try to increase my baseball knowledge so I would not look like a retard around my grandson. However it has seemed to be a smashing success. I have decided to devote this weeks edition to you, the loyal reader. Instead of just copying and pasting this week’s update of the day (don’t worry I will still get to that, which also include a guest writer of the day) I will also copy and paste some of your very encouraging words of kindness. In the interest of keeping the scroll rate down, I will limit it to only a couple randomly selected quotes:
“The horrid sad truth is that Silent Bob will become a huge sportswriter (thanks to SKA) and Keal will sue him for 600,000” – sf9ers4905
“I’ve stopped watching Mariners games, simply because I don’t want them to spoil Zortisque’s Update of the Week. It’s Marinerific!!” – BKOB
“your articles are my personal hell” – 5bowls
“Im gonna kill myself if I have to read another one of these fucking mariner articles” – TheAviator4102
“This really is the worst article I’ve ever read” – Steve Brock
“The only thing I got is another fucking Mariners update from Silent Bob. I love the guy but holy shit is he gonna keep doing this?” – Keal
The last one hit me hard. I can really feel the fear in Keal’s tone. Don’t Worry Keal, I am. And now the updates!

It was an interesting weekend. After losing to the Red Sox on Thursday, who would have guessed that the Mariners would go 2-1 against them (splitting the series), and the only loss would be when Felix was on the pitching mound? Not this guy. I am still trying to figure out what happened this weekend. First there is Friday, when Cruz hit the game winning RBI. This in it’s self in not that out of the ordinary, but the fact that Cruz did not have any hits (weird) and the Red Sox actually pitched to Cruz when 1st base was open in the bottom of the 9th, goes against everything I have seen. Mariners won 2-1. Then there is Saturday. A game that was a win on paper, as Felix was pitching. I believe at this point that someone on the Red Sox drugged and/or poisoned Hernandez. He looked awful. Mariners lost 4-2. And then there was Sunday. This was game 2 for me and the grandson, and Nelson Cruz poster night. We actually got to watch the Mariners win 5-0 live and in person. James Paxton (who must have had a slow start this year) has now pitched 20 consecutive innings without a run. That seems like a pretty good thing. This completed a 9 home game stretch in which the Mariners went 6-3. Up next is a 9 away game stretch starting at Baltimore. Mariners are still in 3rd place in the AL West now 8 games behind Houston at 17-20.

Another much needed day of rest (they seem to have a lot of those) the Mariners will start a 3 game stretch at Baltimore. Tonight Walker (1-4) will face off against Gonzalez (4-2). Tomorrow we will see Elias (0-1) against Chen (1-2). And finally on Thursday we will have Happ (3-1) against Tilman (2-5). The real treat is these games will actually start at 4pm (Thursday is a morning game), so I will not be up all night watching the games. The Mariners are still sitting at 3rd place in the AL West, but the second place Angles are in a 2 game losing streak, and 1st place Astros lost as well against the mighty A’s. The Mariners need to pull off a winning away series to keep this division interesting.

The Mariners lost last night 4-9. Yesterday I stated that I was excited in the fact that the games started early, so I would not have to be up all night. In reality this just meant that by the time I got home the Mariners were done playing. Oh the game was not over, but I got home in the bottom of the 3rd. The Mariners were up 4-1. The boy showed up shortly after, and we settled down to watch the game. One inning later it was tied 4-4. 2 more it was 4-7, then 4-8, and 4-9. Luckily we did not have to watch the bottom of the 9th, as they end it if the home team is up, or it would have likely been worst. The grand kids do not have to go to school today (as there is a teacher walk out going on) so I would have gladly have taken a late game if it would have meant a win. Mariners are now 4 games south of 500 at 17-21 (yet still good enough for 3rd int he AL West) and if my calculations/memory serves me right, the last time they were above 500 was April 6th. Good times..
Side note: It appears that Nelson Cruz was a ex-Oriole. They (the fans) gave him great respect when he stepped up to bat the first time. (I did not see it as I was commuting, but I did hear it on the radio.) I was not into baseball at the time, but I seem to remember A-Rod did not get the same type of welcome when he came back to Seattle.

The Mariners won last night, 4-2 against the Orioles. This makes this 3 game series tied up at 1-1. The tie breaker will be played this morning, so I will not be watching it with the grandson. Elias was the starter last night, and he looked awesome. Elias, who was brought up from the Rainiers (the Mariners Triple-A team) because Hisashi Iwakuma is broken, has been a real treat. He allowed only 1 run, no walks and only 6 hits in 7 2/3 innings. In fact it was not until the 7th inning that he allowed a runner to get past 1st base. The bullpen did try to lose this game for the mighty Mariners, but Rodney pulled off his 10th save of the season sending his victory arrow to outer space. It is scheduled to land down sometime on Friday in Toronto, which is where the Mariners will be heading next.
