Rivalry – Longstanding competition for the same objective, or for superiority in the same field.
It is here, the time is upon us, Rivalry Week in the College Football season. Throw the records out the window, and may the best team win on that given day. These are some of the most memorable games for both the players and fans of the entire football season. We have a couple of huge rivalry games to watch this weekend with monumental implications.
The Apple Cup – #5 Washington @ #23 Washington St
(Series Record: 70-32-6 Washington/Current Steak: Washington 3 wins)
The winner of this game goes to the PAC 12 Championship. The College Football Playoffs are on the line for Washington in this game. If they beat Washington State, and win the PAC 12 Championship game they are sitting in a great spot to enter the playoffs. Like most college football rivalries, there have been a number of upsets over the 108 meetings in the Apple Cup. Washington needs to avoid that in Pullman.
The Game – #3 Michigan @ #2 The Ohio State
(Series Record: 58-47-6 Michigan/Current Streak: Ohio State 4 wins)
This game needs no introduction. The winner will have the inside track to a place in the College Football Playoffs, while the loser will get a decent Bowl game consultation prize. To understand this rivalry, I turn to a famous quote by Ohio State coach Woody Hayes. A reporter asked him after a Michigan game, “Coach, why did you go for 2 points with a 50-14 lead?” And Woody replied, “Because they wouldn’t let me go for 3.” This is the greatest rivalry in all of sports.
