Zortique’s Mariners Update of the Week – Math is Fun

There are a lot of things that I do not understand about baseball. This week I was told about the Pythagorean Winning Percentage. What is the Pythagorean Winning Percentage?

There are two ways of calculating Pythagorean Winning Percentage (W%). The more commonly used, and simpler version uses an exponent of 2 in the formula.
W%=[(Runs Scored)^2]/[(Runs Scored)^2 + (Runs Allowed)^2]
More accurate versions of the formula use 1.81 or 1.83 as the exponent.
W%=[(Runs Scored)^1.81]/[(Runs Scored)^1.81 + (Runs Allowed)^1.81]
Expected W-L can then be obtained by multiplying W% by the team’s total number of games played, then rounding off.

What does this all mean? No clue, but I decided to see if this proves that the Mariners will win the world series this year, like we know they will. Checking stats this morning, it looks like the Mariners have scored 330 runs so far this year, and allowed 275. (We will use the common more accurate method, not the simple method.)
W%=(330^1.81)/(330^1.81 + 275^1.81)
W%=36183.47/36183.47 + 26013.10
W%=36183.47/62196.57
W%=58.18
With 162 games played, apparently the Pythagorean Winning Percentage is telling us that the Mariners will end the season, 95-67. I guess we are going 60-36 for the remainder of the year.
I think it is just easier to say the Mariners are going to win the World Series this year, but this was fun too.

The Updates!

Zorstique’s Mariners Update of the Day – 6/13/2016
The Mariners came really close to sweeping the Rangers like I had hope they would. The only thing that stopped them were games 2 and 3. The Mariners crushed the Rangers Friday night 7-5, which also was fireworks night at Safeco field, a fan favorite. Game 2 was an epic pitching battle, in which the Mariners were up 1-0 until the 9th inning. The Rangers then tied the game, forcing extra innings. A solo home run in the 11th and the Mariners lost 2-1. Game 3 started out bad when the Mariners were down 3-0 in the 4th. But Martin solo home run in the 5th got the Mariners within two. Unfortunately the Rangers answered back with 3 more runs in the 6th. Then the 8th inning came up with 2 outs and bases loaded, when our favorite 3rd baseman Kyle Seager was hit by a pitch, and Iannetta was walked, to create 2 runs. Then our 5 tool player Martin walked up to the plate. Bases still loaded, and Martin was 1 grand slam away from 2 home runs and a grand slam for the night. What should have been a magical come back in the 8th fell short, as Martin grounded out. Basically the Mariners would have swept with one less home run game 2, and one more game 3. The Mariners finally have a day of rest today after playing 17 days in a row.

Zorstique’s Mighty A’s Update of the Day – 6/14/2016
The Mariners enjoyed a much needed day of rest yesterday (moving .5 games closer to 1st), so I will provide some bonus coverage of SKA’s second favorite AL West team. (Please note I do not have the ability to watch every A’s game like Mariners games, I am recapping based on what I saw on gamecast, and the box score, so I do not have great specifics.) Yesterday I said the Rangers were going to start sliding, but I did not imagine it would happen so fast, and so hard. After losing 7 in a row the mighty A’s destroyed the Rangers last night, 14-5. The Rangers starter (Ramos) gave up 8 runs before the 4th inning ended, when an ex-Mariner took over (I cannot remember his name now, but clearly he was not good enough to stay a Mariner.) The A’s were not done, scoring 1 more run in the 4th, and 4 more in the 5th. I am pretty sure they pulled this off by hitting a bunch of base hits, instead of trying (and failing) to hit homeruns every at bat. However there is some bad news, as reported by Nav. “Starting pitcher (Sean Manaea) who probably would (have) long term rotation fixture left game with forearm injury. Forearm injury comes with assumation of Tommy John.”

Zorstique’s Mariners Update of the Day – 6/15/2016
Yesterday was a painful game to watch. The same day that Nav warned us all to watch out if your pitcher loses speed on his fast ball, Taijaun Walker’s fast ball dropped and had an ugly looking follow up. The Mariner’s staff quickly went to the mound, and pulled Walker in the 4th. There are some conflicting information, it could be an aggravated right Achilles, or just tendinitis. Hopefully nothing serious, but rumor is he will be okay for the next start. The positive news of the day is that Edwin DIaz threw 2.2 scoreless innings, and striking out 5. Pretty impressive for his 3rd Major appearance. Unfortunately in the time it took me to take a piss, the Mariners blew a 7-4 lead. For some reason Dae Ho was not used as a pitch hitter late in the game, so we were not able to catch back up, Mariners lost 8-7.

Baseball is dumb. The Mariners suck. I had a more detailed analyst written, but I think this summarizes it nicely.

Zorstique’s Dae-Ho Lee Update of the Day: – 6/17/2016
Daaeee Hooooo!
By now we all know that the Mariners won 6-4 against the Rays yesterday, thus avoiding the sweep. What you might not know is that Dae Ho picked up 3 more RBI’s including 2 on his first double this year. As crazy as it sounds, Lee is tied with Robinson Cano with 7 games of 3 or more RBIs. In fact, only Cano, Cruz and Seager have more RBI’s this year, and Dae Ho has less than half of their at bat appearances. He currently has the highest batting average, slugging percentage, and is 4th in home runs, again despite his less than half at bat opportunities. Not bad for the obvious rookie of the year.
