The stage is set, as we now know who the four teams are vying for the College Football National Championship. The only conference not represented in the playoffs is the BIG 12. The Semi final match-ups will be Alabama versus Washington and Clemson versus The Ohio State. Let’s take a deeper look into each playoff bound team.
#1 Alabama (13-0)
Under Head Coach Nick Saban the Crimson Tide are the only school to be in each of the first 3 College Football Playoffs. Alabama comes in as reigning National Champions, winners of 25 straight games. They are led by the #1 ranked defense, and have scored 14 “non-offensive” touchdowns this season. On the offensive side of the ball, they are led by a true freshman QB, who is certainly more comfortable running the ball than passing down field. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has adjusted his scheme to fit QB Jalen Hurts’s abilities. This means tons of running plays and short passes, mainly bubble screens to playmaking WR’s. Jalen Hurts also loves to get the ball to his athletic TE O.J. Howard.
#2 Clemson (12-1)
Under Head Coach Dabo Swinney this is the 2nd straight playoff appearance for the Tigers. Clemson comes into the playoffs as an experienced team, after making it to the championship game last year. On offense, they are led by Junior QB Deshaun Watson. His favorite target is fellow Junior WR Mike Williams. On the defensive side of the ball, they have playmakers at each level. They are a well balanced team.
#3 The Ohio State (11-1)
Under Head Coach Urban Meyer the Buckeyes are making their 2nd playoff appearance in 3 years. Again, it bears repeating that this is the youngest team of any Power 5 conference school, so to be in the College Football Playoffs is nothing short of miraculous. The Buckeyes are led on offense by a trio of dynamic playmakers; QB JT Barrett, RB Curtis Samuel, and freshman RB Mike Webber. On defense, they have talent at each level; DL Nick Bosa, LB Raekwon McMillan, CB Gareon Conley, S Malik Hooker.
#4 Washington (12-1)
Under Head Coach Chris Petersen this is the Huskies 1st appearance in the playoffs. Washington drew the short straw, as they will face Alabama in the semi finals of the College Football Playoffs. The Huskies are a loaded offense led by QB Jake Browning. The have multiple skill position playmakers; RB’s Myles Gaskin and Lavon Coleman, and WR’s John Ross and Dante Pettis. Their defense is led by playmakers in the secondary, DB’s Budda Baker and Kevin King.
