Flashback to four years ago, the Rams completed a mega deal with the Washington Redskins for the 2nd overall pick. A move most Rams fans laughed about and called it “trade rape”. They would mock the Redskins fans that could come around and post pictures of the players the Rams drafted, from the haul of picks, as captains in the game versus the Skins. It was all fun and games for everyone but the Redskins.
Four years later the Rams are at the other end of the deal and their fanbase is being delusional about it. RG3 had a way better resume and draft grade than either Wentz or Goff. Neither Wentz or Goff is considered pro ready and most of the talk this offseason was about whoever drafted these QBs would have to sit them for a year to learn the system. The Rams gave up a lot for a QB that most scouts and analysts believe shouldn’t even play this season. Drafting a player that shouldn’t play is a far cry from drafting a rookie of the year, playoff QB like what Washington got.

In the chart above I will compared the two hauls from both the Redskins trade with the Rams and the Titans trade with the Rams. The Rams received tremendous value for the picks they received from Washington mainly because Washington was horrible in 2014. The 2nd overall pick the Rams received from the Skins greatly skewed the value of the overall draft. For the Rams and Titans draft I projected the values the Titans receive in the future as equal to this year. I think the Titans will actually receive a higher value for the picks next year than what I have posted, because I think the Rams will be bottom 10 in the league next year. They lost a lot of vets and will be starting a rookie qb, Nick Foles, or Case Keenum. Even if the Rams do finish in the same draft position next year the Titans still owned them on overall value and it appears that the Rams overpaid by a 2nd round pick from this year.
In the end the Redskins did make the playoffs 2 times in the 4 years since the draft and the Rams made it 0 times. The Redskins no longer have the guy they traded up for though. The Rams would kill to make the playoffs even if this trade doesn’t work out, but the Rams don’t play in the up and down NFCE they play in the NFCW. The Rams also do not have good offensive coaches and I have little faith in them developing a QB. They also have mediocre WRs, no TEs, and a relatively porous offensive line. The team around this rookie qb will offer little support outside of the run game.
