The Debate is over.
Thanks to some simple yet cleverly applied physics calculations from our friends at Vegas Advanced Sports Analytics we have cleverly applied physics calculations to highlight data for which NFL QB throws with the strongest velocity (MPH).
Vega Analytics has taken the Launch angle, distance, set/on the run, are all factors to consider. Fitting a ball into tight space 10 yards down the field vs. launching it 80 yards is different. Set vs. on the run is also different.
The play where Mahomes earned his “world’s strongest arm” title. It’s insane how much velocity this thing has after traveling ~40 yards, almost knocks Hardman off balance.
With larger samples of tracking data you could do some very useful analysis here. Vegas Analytics hypothesis would be that more successful QBs are able to better modulate their launch kinematics depending on the route and separation, which may give useful signal not captured in play by play.
I don’t think the “strongest arm” debate is over! In fact, its only beginning! One thing is for sure Mahomes is the GOAT.
