I’m refraining from calling this a “prediction” piece this season. Predictions indicate one firmly believes something will happen and isn’t afraid to stand behind that judgment. In the NFL, nothing is certain except Roger Goodell’s poor judgment. That said, I’ll offer some form of prognostication, even if it’s lighthearted and not entirely backed up by evidence, but I really have no interest in how “correct” I’ll be.
As usual, these picks are for fun and should in no way be used for actual wagering purposes. That is, unless you want to make a ton of money in a legal forum, because we know more stuff and things about football than you do or something.
On to the games!
Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) @ Cincinnati Bengals (0-6)
Sunday, October 20, 1:00 pm ET, CBS
In a word: Ugh. While the Gardner Minshew show continues, the Andy Dalton reruns – untimely interceptions, poor reads, useless outside the pocket – are becoming unbearable to watch. Given this week’s trade of mercurial CB Jalen Ramsey to the Rams, it’s becoming increasingly obvious the Jaguars are focusing on the future, although their present will be enough to beat the woeful-in-every-facet Bengals at home. The Bengals, meanwhile, appear to be (sort of) competing and not tanking, which would be poor team-building strategy. Is anyone really surprised?
Jaguars 27, Bengals 17
Baltimore Ravens (4-2) @ Seattle Seahawks (5-1)
Sunday, October 20, 4:25 pm ET, FOX
Despite this week’s acquisition of CB Marcus Peters and activation of S Bennett Jackson, the Ravens’ defense will be hard pressed to contain Seattle QB and early MVP candidate Russell Wilson, who essentially represents what Ravens QB Lamar Jackson hopes to become. The already-suspect Ravens defense will continue to struggle if they don’t generate some semblance of a pass rush or at minimum, consistent pressure on Wilson, and without a change in the defensive front seven, it’s unlikely we’ll see progress this week. One potential saving grace is that Seattle’s had trouble rushing the passer as well. Expect a lot of points; most of them for Seattle.
