Trying out a new format today – something something “keys to the game” something.  Hope you all dig it.

Steelers 16, Bengals 10

The post-Matt Canada era begins in Cincinnati, with so-so results.

Key numbers for the Steelers:

  • 24-33, 278 yards – QB Kenny Pickett
  • 15 carries, 99 yards, 1 TD – RB Najee Harris
  • 9 catches, 129 yards – TE Pat Freiermuth
  • 5 tackles, 2 sacks – OLB T.J. Watt
  • 1 INT – S Trenton Thompson

Key numbers for the Bengals:

  • 19-26, 227, 1 TD, 1 INT – QB Jake Browning (first NFL start)
  • 8 carries, 16 yards – RB Joe Mixon
  • 4 catches, 81 yards – WR Ja’Marr Chase
  • 10 tackles – LB Logan Wilson
  • 8 tackles, 2 TFL – CB Mike Hilton

Key moment:

Late in the third quarter, Bengals QB Jake Browning was intercepted by Steelers S Trenton Thompson.  The Steelers would score a TD on the subsequent drive, and didn’t trail again.

Browns 12, Broncos 29

In a bizarre, mistake-filled “fumble-fest”, the surging Broncos held sway at home while the battered Browns were lucky to not sustain any long-term injuries.

Key numbers:

  • 14-29, 134 yards, 1 TD – QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
  • 13-22, 134 yards, 1 TD  – Broncos QB Russell Wilson
  • 24 carries, 107 yards – all Browns rushers
  • 39 carries, 169 yards, 2 TDs – all Broncos rushers
  • 7 total fumbles by both teams
  • 12 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL – LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
  • 3 punts from P Corey Bojorquez for 181 yards (60.3 avg)

Key moment:

QB Thompson-Robinson was knocked out of the game in the third quarter, shortly after throwing his first career TD pass and seemingly seizing – then losing – the momentum.

Ravens 20, Chargers 10

The Ravens overcame their tendency to lose games in the fourth quarter, mostly on the strength of their defense but with some help from rookie WR Zay Flowers.

Key numbers:

  • 18-32, 177 yards, 1 TD – QB Lamar Jackson
  • 9 carries, 64 yards – RB Keaton Mitchell
  • 5 catches, 25 yards, 1 rec. TD; 1 carry, 37 yards, 1 TD – WR Zay Flowers
  • 9 QB hits – Ravens defense
  • 14 catches, 106 yards  – Chargers WR Keenan Allen
  • 4 turnovers by the Chargers
  • 3 points off turnovers – Ravens

Key moment:

Ravens CB Arthur Maulet forcing an incompletion/intentional grounding on a CB blitz on 4th and 6, with under two minutes remaining.

Let me know what you think of the layout.  It’s a cleaner approach without all my words, so maybe that’s preferable.

See y’all next week.
